MONDO CANE – Haimney Gallery
On a planet suspiciously similar to our own, a number of individuals behave in ways that seem utterly incomprehensible: they amputate themselves while toasting, they prostrate before shackled aliens, they tie themselves to trees and to each other… and they smile.
Welcome to Mundo Cane.
More than two years have passed since Cane’s last exhibition. Since then, much of his activity has focused on street art, but we have seen very little of his studio work.
Mundo Cane is the title of this solo exhibition at Haimney Gallery and, as the name suggests, its intention is to immerse us in the artist’s personal universe. Whether because of the number of works or the variety of techniques and styles, what we encounter is a rich catalogue of his most recent creations, developed patiently and methodically during this period of silence.
Many of his paintings remain true to their signature traits: an insistently bright and pastel palette, remote landscapes filled with impossible vegetation, characters with permanent smiles, and absurdity as the driving force.
However, we also see how the artist tirelessly sharpens the reality of his works, adding more and more details to his world, making the actions of his characters increasingly complex, enriching the spaces they inhabit, and refining the overall construction with finer brushstrokes.
And going beyond the canvas, we see for the first time how his characters acquire volume through small sculptures—and how they move thanks to animation.
Ultimately, Mundo Cane promises to be a festive, colorful exhibition that celebrates nonsense and contradiction—what Alfred Jarry once called “the carnival of being.”
